Singapore's Retail Sales decline 8.2 Percent

Singapore's retail sales declined 8.2 per cent in June 2008 for the ninth consecutive month at a time when the economy of city-state has shown some signs of recovery beating the adverse impact of global slowdown. A recently released report by Statistics Department of the country said that sales dropped by 1.5 per cent excluding sales of motor vehicles.

Singapore based firms placed more advertisements for professional jobs in second quarter of the current financial year, indicating signs of recovery in the economy adversely impacted by global slowdown. Singapore lags behinds only to Hong Kong which posted 9.1 per cent rise in advertisements during the quarter.

STT set to buy Eircom for €130 millon

Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT) is set to buy Ireland based telecom operator Eircom for €130m by the end of next week, according to reports by confidential sources. The telecom giant had earlier offered €120m for Eircom in June which was supported by the Eircom Employee Share Ownership Trust (ESOT).

Hong Kong marks the end of recession

Hong Kong marked the end of recession by reporting a growth of 3.3 percent in the quarter ended June 30.

Chief economist, Paul Tang who works at Bank of East Asia said better exports and pick-up in private consumption backed GDP.

The govt. lifted its growth-forecast for the entire year after the recording better-than-expected seasonally-adjusted figures.

Hong Kong had been suffering economic contraction for four repeated quarters, starting Q2 of 2008.

APEC meeting in Singapore to be attended by Obama

Thursday saw White House coming out with the announcement that the 17th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders meeting in Singapore, scheduled later this year, will be attended by the US President Barack Obama.

It was forwarded by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, "President Obama will attend the 17th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' meeting in Singapore on November 14-15."

First dedicated wildlife rescue center announced by Singapore

With the aim of rescuing distressed animals and returning them to their native homes, Singapore is creating the first dedicated wildlife rescue center.

Singapore's 'Animal Concerns Research and Education Society' (ACRES) has initiated the Wildlife Rescue Center, which will serve protected species, nurture them back to health and return them to their native environment.

Furthermore, the ACRES also will target at educating people on protecting animals and the environment through the center.

Top rank retained by Singapore in UIA’s ‘Top International Meeting City’ category

It has appeared that in the 'Top International Meeting City' category in the Union of International Associations (UIA) 2008 Global Rankings, top spot has been maintained by Singapore for the second consecutive year.

Furthermore, Singapore also moved up one position from the previous year, taking the third place in the 'Top International Meeting Countries' category behind USA and France, claims the UIA's International Meeting Statistics 2008 report.

Growth by 3.8% seen in Singapore July bunker sales

The first seven months of this year saw Singapore's bunkering sector post fuel sales of more than 20 million metric tonnes (mt), after the July figures indicated an increase from the previous month.

Preliminary estimates from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) specify that July bunker sales were up 3.8% from June to 3.0726 million mt, bolstered by sales of 380 centistoke (cst) bunker grade.

The sales for July increased 1.4%, year-on-year, compared to 3.0309 million mt in the same month last year.

Dockwise bags eight new contracts

Dockwise Ltd, a subsidiary of Dockwise Shipping, has bagged eight new contracts for transporting jackup drilling rig and port and marine infrastructure. The firm expects revenue of approximately US$27 million from the recently allotted contracts.

The company, with its partners, will transport one jackup to Egypt, a barge to Australia and dredging equipment to United States. It will also transport river tankers to Panama and 3 ferries in different journeys to Abu Dhabi, under this contract to be carried out in Q3 and Q4 2009.

Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 viruses reported by China, Singapore

It was recently forwarded by the World Health Organization that the list of countries that have reported Tamiflu-resistant swine flu viruses has two new names: China and Singapore.

According to Charles Penn, a scientist with the Geneva-based agency, the WHO has also been informally made aware about the discovery of a small number of other Tamiflu-resistant viruses. However, he did not specify as to where these cases have been reported.
