EA has high hopes from Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic is all set to be launch on Tuesday, and Electronic Arts (EA) is hoping that the newest multi-player online video game in the Star Wars series can provide it with an edge over World of Warcraft.

Activision's World of Warcraft, which has been running for around seven years, has around 10 million subscribers and is generating roughly $500 million a year from subscriptions.

The upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic, the most expensive game ever by EA, has already been preordered by more then 1 million gamers. Estimates suggest that the latest online fantasy game could generate billions from subscriptions.

The beta test for Star Wars: The Old Republic was joined by as many as two million players.

To be available for a monthly subscription of 8.99 pounds, Star Wars: The Old Republic will allow players to create their own characters and to team up with other players online to explore the world full of cut-throat competitions.

Developed at a cost of more than $130 million, the game will allow gamers to play as lightsaber-wielding Jedi or wicked Sith. But, the players will not be able to play as famous characters like Darth Vader.
