“Washington Opportunity Scholarship” to Support Low Income Students

Washington Opportunity Scholarship is a new encouraging proposal to offer scholarships for undergraduate students in Washington, who are studying a high-demand field. As per the proposed system, there will be around 10,000 scholarships of $1,000 apiece when it begins giving out money in December.

For the commencing of plan two renowned companies, Boeing and Microsoft Corp. offered a grant of $25 million each. "When states hit hard economic times, the higher-education budget gets hit harder than anything else”, said Vice President of Microsoft and a member of the governor's task force on higher-education funding, Brad Smith. "Creating a long-term sustainable foundation for higher education is something that is badly needed, and something no state in this country has done”.

The outlined scholarship is aimed to support students who acquire low or middle income resource including whose family incomes are up to $97,500 for a family of four. The state had contributed $5 million for the years of 2011-13.

In addition to this, the legislation had also drafted the Opportunity Expansion Program, to grant money for higher education institutions whereas, the organizations who qualify for the state research and development tax credit can opt to donate that money.

State residents, who attended a community college and pursuing a bachelor’s degree, are eligible to apply for the scholarship.
